At the end of last month, I attended my second WonderCon, an annual convention for comics, sci fi, film, and more that brings in over 60,000 attendees. Last time I went in 2016, it was in Los Angeles. This year, it was back in its usual venue at the Anaheim Convention Center. Keep reading for the recap of my day there as well as some of my favorite cosplay photos!
Rough Start
I had planned to go both Saturday and Sunday and had even planned a cosplay. However, I ended up getting really sick on Saturday and had to stay in bed all day so I was only able to attend on Sunday.

What I Wore
I decided to save my intended cosplay plans for another con and went decked out in Voltron/Shiro apparel. It was nice to go casual but still get recognized as “Shiro” by other Voltron fans. One teen who saw me said “Yass Queen!” and another went up to tell me I looked “so cool” which made me feel super validated as someone turning 30 next year XD
For his “floof,” I added a bangs clip-on I bought off Wish and used a lipliner to recreate Shiro’s scar.
Arrival
I rode with my sister and her boyfriend down to Anaheim. After parking quite far from the venue, we took a bus over. Upon arriving at the convention center, I immediately was struck by all the awesome cosplayers.
I got a good kick out of this baby Tribbles claw game filled with pom poms.
Exhibit Hall
I explored the exhibit hall and artist’s alley and was actually able to resist buying anything for myself (I got a birthday gift for a friend). I also checked out these super cute berets by Just Peachy on a recommendation from my friend and beret queen Courtney.
Meeting Shiro’s #1 Fan
A big highlight for me was meeting the #1 Shiro Stan, Stephanie Michelle (@omystephanie). She’s a super talented and funny cosplayer and Youtuber who’s love for Voltron and Shiro surpasses my own. We met briefly last year at Anime Expo but that was before I discovered Voltron. Since then, she’s become one of my favorite Voltron fan accounts. I find her tweets and sense of humor incredibly relatable and assures me I’m not the only one my age who feels this passionately for this show and character.
Our meeting was super random and totally by chance. I was walking through artist’s alley near the end of the day when someone tapped me on the shoulder from behind. Lo, and behold it was Steph! She wanted to know where I had gotten my Voltron hat. She was super sweet just like last time and we talked for a couple minutes about our love for Shiro (and how all three of us suffer from chronic pain). Before we parted ways, I told her I was actually one of her followers and asked for a photo which her husband gladly took for us (thanks, Justin!).
End of the Con
Once the con ended, I went to meet my sister outside. I bumped into my friend Bryan who was looked amazing cosplaying Michael Jackson’s Captain EO. We caught up for a while before a Voltron group asked me to join them for a few photos (unfortunately I don’t have any of the photos) and I joined my sister to go home.
Looks like we’ve got an X-Men vs Justice League situation here.
Thoughts
I didn’t do a ton of stuff, but I had fun and am grateful I got to go even just for a short while. I like WonderCon because while it is a pretty large scale con, it never feels overwhelming like Comic Con or Anime Expo. You can really take it easy and enjoy what it has to offer.
My next con will be MegaCon Orlando at the end of May, and I hope by then I’ll be feeling a lot better so I can attend all days, have some cosplay fun of my own, and really enjoy my time there.
An Assassin’s Creed cosplay group.
Cosplay
Usually I do a separate post for Cosplay but I decided to combine it with my Recap since it was such a short amount of time. Enjoy these fun cosplay photos I took throughout the day!
