LA Comic Con 2018 took place October 26-28 in downtown Los Angeles. Formerly known as Stan Lee’s Comikaze, it was the first convention I ever staffed. I did it two years in a row then later referred my sister and she’s been working it each year since. Unfortunately, due to my super busy schedule around Halloween-time when the con takes place, I haven’t been able to able to attend much less work it the past couple years. This year, I wanted to change that. Keep reading for my brief 2018 LA Comic Con experience!
I finally made it to the LA Convention Center on the last day of the con, Sunday, at the very last hour – getting off the metro stop a little after 3pm. With the con ending at 4:30pm, I had a little over an hour to get to the con and check it out. Once I reached the convention center, I met up with my sister, Melissa. She had been working the event every day but hadn’t actually had a chance to walk around and see anything outside of her work area. With the con about to close, there wasn’t much for her to do so she was able to take a break with me.
This Giselle from Enchanted cosplay immediately caught my attention.
We stopped first at the Hero Within booth to say hi to our friend Tony aka Crazy4ComicCon and check out their awesome new merch. I was LIVING for their con exclusive Caption America sweater. SO CUTE. It’s not even listed on their site yet but if anyone needs an idea of what to get me for Christmas… there you go.
While you can’t get the sweater yet, the Avengers bomber jacket IS open for preorders!
Dresses inspired by Black Panther and Wonder Woman
While there, we saw this incredible Frozen wheelchair float.
The only photos I have of me from the con. Thanks to my sister for taking them!
Such a cute phone case! I was happy to see there’s still Mystic Messenger stuff out there!
We went up and down a bunch of aisles looking at booths and taking a couple photos of cosplayers. We eventually stopped by a booth to enter a drawing for a free San Diego Comic Con hotel. They also tried signing us up for a time share meeting (y’know one of those attend this meeting and we’ll give you a free round trip for two to Hawaii kind of deals). At that point, my sister had to return to her post and I had to fend for myself the rest of the con – which luckily wasn’t too long. And yet–
Probably our favorite cosplay duo of the day! Hades and Meg from Hercules! These ladies look amazing!
After leaving the booth, it wasn’t long before a strange man followed me down one of the main aisles, repeatedly trying to get my attention as I ignored him, then harassed me for about 15 straight minutes (although it seemed like an eternity). Keeping it vague and short as to not damper the entirety of my post, I was very shaken up and unsettled by the experience. By the time the man finally left me alone, it was exactly 4:30 and the con had ended. Now feeling a bit uncomfortable to be on my own, I didn’t mind leaving the floor and quickly walked out into the lobby area.
I affectionately call my sister “Cow” (she calls me “Pig”) so I had to take a shot of this Marvel cow on my way out.
I shook off the unpleasant encounter by taking photos of some of the amazing cosplays. Here are a few of my favorites:
So many Spideys! Melissa took this shot from the Spider-Man meetup.
There weren’t quite as many cosplayers as I had expected – but this was probably due to how late in the day I arrived.
I didn’t get to meet up with my friends but I’m glad I got to see some great cosplays and my sister briefly. I don’t want to let one bad occurrence ruin my whole con experience so hopefully, I’ll get another chance to attend next year to make a better memory (also hopefully for a longer period of time as well).
Nevertheless, if you live in or near Los Angeles, this is definitely a nice starter convention and a good place to come show off your cosplays (or just come in your Halloween costume!) and hang out with fellow geeky friends.
