10 Spring Essentials For Beauty & Fashion

10 Spring Essentials 2017 // The Geeky Fashionista

Living in Los Angeles, I don’t normally get to see the drastic change from a cold winter to a warm spring. This particular winter has been a bizarre one though (hello, climate change!) with lots and lots of rain in LA resulting in much colder (and wetter) weather than you’d imagine for our usually year-round sunny city. I have noticed a return to warmer – and dryer – weather recently and hopefully it stays that way. LA people are just not cut out for the cold/rain – luckily I grew up in Florida so it doesn’t bother me.

The change in season brought more than just warmer weather and more sun, it also means a change in in our makeup and wardrobe. It’s time to put away those big winter coats and boots and time to start breaking out floral prints and pastels!

    2017 Oscars Best Dressed

2017 Oscars Best Dressed // The Geeky Fashionista

I think this is the earliest I’ve ever put up a Best Dressed list! Yay – go me!! I really haven’t been feeling very well all week (meaning no annual Oscars viewing party with friends for me) so it’s been a bit difficult doing, well, anything but seeing as how I’m leaving in 2 days to go to AUSTRALIA (!!!), I really wanted to push myself to get this post up ASAP.

Anyway…the Oscars were this past Sunday and despite being majorly sick in bed, I was still able to watch (and tweet) the broadcast in real time! And what an Oscars it was! Of course, there was that infamous Best Picture snafu we’ve all heard about by now… Despite that, overall, I thought it was a really good show and that Jimmy Kimmel did a great job hosting.

La La Land was one of my Top 5 Films of the year but I was glad to see one of my other favorites, Hacksaw Ridge, getting some love and taking home 2 awards. I’m usually pretty spot on with my Oscars predictions each year but this year with 18 out of 24, I was a bit off. Some winners threw me for a loop (i.e. Suicide Squad) and others (Fantastic Beasts, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival) I was genuinely happy to be wrong about.

But this post is about FASHION so let’s talk about that. There were some real stunners on the red carpet. I miss my flowy gowns of awards shows past, but it’s definitely interesting to see how fashion evolves over the years. The biggest color trends I saw were lots of metallics (especially gold), black, white, and red. There were also lots of long sleeves, high slits, high necklines, low plunging necklines, capes, and velvet!

Who worked these trends the best? Keep reading for my Oscars Best Dressed List!

Also be sure to check out my red carpet posts from past years.

A Day In Seattle: 10 Things To Do

10 Things To Do In Seattle

My boyfriend, Luke, and I flew up to Seattle to spend our Fourth of July weekend with his sister, Holly, and her husband, Matt, along with a few other friends of ours. We arrived late Friday night and were planning to go camping on Sunday/Monday for the Fourth before flying back super early Tuesday morning so we only had Saturday to do any touristy activities in the city. Luckily, Luke and Holly are great planners (even if Luke denies this) and had a full fun day planned for us. If you find yourself in Seattle and only have an afternoon or even a few hours, I highly recommend you check out each of these places! We did everything in less than a day and you can too!

    10 Sick Day Essentials

I absolutely hate being sick. Growing up, I used to get sick ALL the time and even just a couple years ago when I lived in NYC, I was more often sick than not. After living in that massive germ-flourishing city, my immune system has definitley gotten a lot stronger and since my move to LA, it’s much rarer that I’m ever ill. I also like to think that I’ve gotten a lot better at combatting sickness as soon as the first signs show so my sick time is minimal. Two days ago, I experienced one of those first signs – a slight tickle in my throat. I knew I was going to be sick soon and immediately started fighting it. Homemade chicken soup – check. Fluids – check. Lots of sleep – check. The next day, I naturally had a sore throat, fever, and stuffy nose. Fun times. Since I work from home, it doesn’t affect my work much, but I do have a camping trip (my first ever!) and a wedding this weekend. Luckily, this sickness hit me early in the week so I’ve got a good handful of days to completely recover and because I went full-force in fighting it early, as of today all I have left is a slightly runny nose. Another day or two and I’ll be good for hiking!

So we all know it’s no fun being sick. Here are my 10 Sick Day Essentials that makes enduring it a little easier.

    1. Campbell’s Chicken Soup – I have a wonderful homemade recipe that I usually make, but this time around, the veggies in it actually started irritating my throat so I went back to this tried and true favorite. No matter what the sickness, this stuff does the trick. Also, once I’m done eating all the chicken and noodles, I’ll mix two eggs in the remaining broth, heat it up over the stove and have an “egg drop” soup that’s also great.

    2. Emergen-C – As soon as that first sign of sickness shows, I start chugging glasses of this stuff. Not the best tasting, but it does seem to minimize the length of your sickness. If you’re not into Emergen-C, my sister swears by Zicam although I find the taste to be even worse.

    3. Naked Juice – When I’m sick, I normally can’t eat my normal fruits and veggies but I can drink them! This ensures I’m still getting all those good nutrients and vitamins that my body needs. I especially love the Green Machine – so good!

    4. Throat drops – A true life saver! Sore throats can be so painful and these help so much in soothing them. Unless my throat is absolutely killing me, I prefer drops without menthol like these tasty Creamy Strawberry Halls Breezers.

    5. Tissues – Definitely worth dishing out a little extra money to get some that won’t be so harsh on your nose! I’ve bought the cheap stuff before only to regret it later on when my poor nose is all red and peeling.

    6. Ginger Ale – I don’t drink most soda since I get terrible headaches if I drink caffeine but I love ginger ale. I know it’s mostly for calming stomach ailments, but it seems to help in other sicknesses as well.

    7. Hand sanitizer – I don’t want to go around my apartment spreading more germs!

    8. A book – If you’re one of those people wishing they had more time to read, well there’s no better time than when you’re sick. I’m currently reading Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park for the first time and loving it.

    9. Netflix – When I’m feeling so sick and blah that I can’t read anymore, Netflix is the best. Catch up on your favorite show, binge-watch a new series, check out that movie that’s been on your queue forever – here’s your chance. Since I’ve just come back from D23, I’ve had Disney on the brain and so far have watched Mulan, Tarzan, and Lilo & Stitch.

    10. Nyquil – Lots of rest and good sleep are so important to a speedy recovery. However, there are times where, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t go to sleep. That’s when I break out the Nyquil. Knocks me right out.

    Happy Star Wars Day!

Happy Star Wars Day & May the Fourth Be With You!!

For today’s post, I thought I would take a break from my Celebration recaps and share with you some nifty Star Wars stuff to help you celebrate May the Fourth! This post is in no way sponsored, but for convenience’s sake, everything in this post can be purchased on Think Geek! They are actually running a Star Wars Day promotion where all their Star Wars stuff is 20% off and you get a nifty pin if you spend over $20! Promotion only lasts till midnight tonight so if you want something, you better hurry!

    1. R2-D2 Carry-On Luggage – How cute is this? I just love the thought of having Artoo rolling along behind me around the airport.

    2. R2-D2 Measuring Cup Set – My sister got this for Christmas last year, and I am extremely jealous! It’s pretty ingenious how it’s all put together and looks super cute in the kitchen!

    3. X-Wing Knife Block – So cool! I can’t get over how neat this looks! I was THIS close to purchasing it at Celebration but backed out at the last second due to lack of cash.

    4. Darth Vader Toaster – I love Star Wars and I love toast so I need this in my life eventually! I’ve actually had my eye on this for awhile – I don’t own a toaster yet but if I were to buy one, this is it right here.

    5. AT-AT Lawn Ornament – I don’t have a lawn (yet), but when I do, I want this guy on it.

    6. Millennium Falcon Printed Rug – This rug is very high on my Must Have list. Once again, I seriously considered purchasing this at Celebration and just might have done so if they hadn’t run out. With ThinkGeek’s 20% off and free shipping over $75 though, I’m actually glad I didn’t get it there and think I will purchase this myself once I’m done writing this post!

    7. MimoPowerTube Smart Phone Chargers – You don’t understand how valuable portable chargers are to my life especially since I can’t charge my phone in my car! And during Comic Con, these are essential! None of my chargers are as cool looking as these though! My personal favorite is the lightsaber, but you can also get these featuring Yoda, Boba Fett, and Artoo!

    8. Droids Salt and Pepper Shakers – I’m back to the kitchen stuff! Sorry, I can’t help myself! I have the most boring salt and pepper shakers ever, and I wouldn’t mind swapping them out for these cuties. These also ran out at Celebration (I saw the guy take the last one!) otherwise my sister or I probably would have picked these up for ourselves.

    9. Empire Strikes Back Sunshade – I own the Millennium Falcon sunshade and see it get a lot of love, so I wanted to showcase another super cool Star Wars sun shade. This one features the Battle of Hoth and just how awesome does it look?

    10. Tauntan Sleeping Bag – I’ve wanted one of these tauntaun sleeping bags since ThinkGeek first posted it as an April’s Fool joke before it became an actual product. All these years later, I still can’t afford to throw down $150 for a sleeping bag as that costs more than my mattress but…*sigh* one day.

    January Favorites

Can you believe 1/12 of the year has already come and gone? Yep, January is over and I gotta say this year is already the best one yet! God is good and life is amazing! I have so much to be thankful for and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store! This month, I had a TON of favorites I wanted to share with you but I narrowed it down to my top 10 for the month and they are…
    1. Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara – This mascara has a tiny wand and bristles specifically made for your lower lashes! It doesn’t smear or clump and really makes your eyes pop! Love it!
    2. Maybelline master GLAZE by Face Studio in “Make A Mauve” – I’ve been loving this berry color cheek tint for the winter! I just put it high up on my cheekbones and blend with my fingers – looks incredibly natural and dewey on my fair skin.
    3. MAC Mineral Blush in “Love Joy” – Absolutely GORGEOUS blush that I love using on my cheeks and for contouring at times because it’s so pigmented and I love how it warms up my face. It has undertones of gold shimmer which just gives you an amazing radiant and glowy look.
    4. Dorco Razors – Since I have sensitive skin, I love using men’s razors. My dad told me about these when I was researching more affordable razor options like Dollar Shave Club. I HIGHLY recommend these! Found on Amazon, they are great quality razors for an INCREDIBLE price!
    5. Spiced Apple Toddy Candle from Bath & Body Works – Holidays are over but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to let them go! This smells like Christmas to me and I plan on burning it all throughout the winter!
    6. Brown American Eagle Outfitters Combat Boots – I have been wanting a pair of combat boots FOREVER! These are amazing – super comfortable, affordable, easy to wear, and go with just about anything!
    7. Inateck Grey Felt Macbook Case Sleeve Bag – So obsessed with with this! I think it just looks so grown up and classy! The price is also terrific especially for what looks and feels like such a high quality product! Also love that it has multiple pockets (I’ll sometimes put both my iPad and phone it in as well as pens or memory cards) and the little pouch for chargers and cords is a cute bonus!
    8. The Star Wars Graphic Novel – Based on the rough draft script by George Lucas, this is an entirely story than the one we all know and love. Incredibly fast moving with lots of action and interesting characters who, though their names may be familiar, are pretty different from their movie counterparts. Great read!
    9. Jane the Virgin – Very underrated and charming show with a super likable and talented lead in Gina Rodriguez. Despite the telenovella-like storytelling, it is incredibly grounded with fleshed out characters that never seems like caricatures.
    10. Imitation Game – Maybe not the best movie of the year, but one that I incredibly enjoyed. Tragic story of a brilliant and fascinating (count how many times I say that in my video) man with phenomenal performances – especially Benedict Cumberbath – probably his best screen acting to date.
