    2017 Oscars Best Dressed

2017 Oscars Best Dressed // The Geeky Fashionista

I think this is the earliest I’ve ever put up a Best Dressed list! Yay – go me!! I really haven’t been feeling very well all week (meaning no annual Oscars viewing party with friends for me) so it’s been a bit difficult doing, well, anything but seeing as how I’m leaving in 2 days to go to AUSTRALIA (!!!), I really wanted to push myself to get this post up ASAP.

Anyway…the Oscars were this past Sunday and despite being majorly sick in bed, I was still able to watch (and tweet) the broadcast in real time! And what an Oscars it was! Of course, there was that infamous Best Picture snafu we’ve all heard about by now… Despite that, overall, I thought it was a really good show and that Jimmy Kimmel did a great job hosting.

La La Land was one of my Top 5 Films of the year but I was glad to see one of my other favorites, Hacksaw Ridge, getting some love and taking home 2 awards. I’m usually pretty spot on with my Oscars predictions each year but this year with 18 out of 24, I was a bit off. Some winners threw me for a loop (i.e. Suicide Squad) and others (Fantastic Beasts, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival) I was genuinely happy to be wrong about.

But this post is about FASHION so let’s talk about that. There were some real stunners on the red carpet. I miss my flowy gowns of awards shows past, but it’s definitely interesting to see how fashion evolves over the years. The biggest color trends I saw were lots of metallics (especially gold), black, white, and red. There were also lots of long sleeves, high slits, high necklines, low plunging necklines, capes, and velvet!

Who worked these trends the best? Keep reading for my Oscars Best Dressed List!

Also be sure to check out my red carpet posts from past years.

    2016 Oscars: Best Dressed

Sorry this is so late! I haven’t done as many Best Dressed Lists as years past, but I couldn’t NOT do a post for the biggest red carpet fashion event of the year! Instead of a Top 10, I’m going to do my top 5 looks from Oscars Night (with an honorable mention thrown in) and then my top 5 from the Vanity Fair after party – I think I liked those looks even more!

    #1 – Isla Fisher – Marchesa
WHY hasn’t this dress received more attention? I haven’t seen it on a SINGLE Best Dressed list and that’s such a shame because it’s simply beautiful. Isla’s whole look is ON POINT. She looks flawless. The hair, the makeup, the subtle accessories, the simple thin belt – I love it all! I don’t normally like dresses with prints, but this is soooo elegant and lovely. It might not be the most traditional “glamorous” or risk-taking gown, but STILL. Again, how did this go under the radar??

    #2 – Saoirse Ronan – Calvin Klein
Saoirse went from a pretty girl to a stunning woman in this gorgeous emerald gown! The color truly brings out her eyes and perfectly complements her skin. Her soft and natural makeup and hair balance the look’s sexiness with it’s plunging necklace and revealing back.
    #3 – Priyanka Chopra – Zuhair Murad
Such an exquisite gown with beautiful detailing. Love the accessories and subtle makeup.

    #4 – Alicia Vikander – Louis Vuitton
I’m not a fan of the balloon skirt hem, but the rest of the dress is so pretty and yellow looks wonderful on her. I also adore the statement earrings.

    #5 – Jennifer Garner – Atelier Versace
This makes my list more for the fact that Jen looks absolutely stunning than so much the dress which is still pretty but not exactly my taste. The half-half look of the dress is different but a bit odd to me – I think I probably would have liked it more if it just chose one look for both sides.

Honorable Mention – Tina Fey – Atelier Versace
My queen looked so elegant in this beautiful purple gown. I’m not sure about the necklace with blue jewels – I probably would have just left the neck bare like many other ladies or worn an all silver or crystal necklace.

    Oscars Viewing Party!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Oscars weekend! My friend Lee goes all out every year to put on the most amazing Oscars Viewing Party and this year was by far the best year yet! Decorations, food, photo wall, Oscars pool, Best Dressed award, trivia, sponsors, the most amazing friends – this party had it all.

How handsome is my man in a suit?? I am one lucky lady!

How our Oscars pool went down – Ballots with our predictions were promptly turned in at 5:30pm at the start of the show. Various attendees – myself included – were appointed as “judges” to score a handful of ballots (of course not our own) as winners were announced. At the end of the show, each judge announces their highest score and then the winner and runner up are revealed. I tend to be pretty good when it comes to these things, but I hadn’t predicted Mad Max to win the Sound categories and as a result tied for second with 16 out of 24 correct predictions. I didn’t mind though because I was really happy my boyfriend came in first with 17/24. First place prize was The Martian on Blu-Ray and second was The Good Dinosaur on Blu-Ray.

This year’s Best Dressed Award went to my lovely friend Holli who looked stunning in a white floor length gown. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask her where she got it from.

As I did last year, I made a makeshift gown by wearing a long sheer skirt (from Urban Outfitters) with a bustier top. I bought the gold sequin top on sale in college several years ago at a boutique but have never worn it – I can never find the right occasion, but the Oscars seemed perfect! Since the skirt is sheer and the corset showed underneath, I wore a pair of black high-waisted leggings. I kept accessories simple with just a pair of Forever 21 earrings I recently purchased. My hair genie sister put my hair up in a high ponytail and curled the ends. For makeup, I used my Urban Decay Smokey Palette and my new favorite Rimmel lipstick. I might post a more detailed makeup post later ^^

    A few highlights/thoughts from this year…

Chris Rock’s opening monologue – I thought he did a great job as host.

R2-D2, C-3PO, and BB-8!!! I loved seeing my favorite droids on stage!

Louis CK for next year’s host! He is hilarious.

Seeing Leonard Nimoy in the Memorium tribute hit me HARD right in the feels.

Lady Gaga’s chilling and powerful performance.

And of course, Leo finally, FINALLY winning his much deserved Oscar. And Kate Winslet’s teary face as he gave his acceptance speech.

Although not technically having to do with the Oscars, after the party I went up to our friend John and Holli’s apartment to meet their new ragdoll kitten named LEO (so it’s somewhat Oscars relevant) and he is absolutely adorable and makes me miss my kitty even more than I already do.

    And then lowlights…

Star Wars not winning anything – I for sure thought it would at least get Visual Effects. Where did Ex Machina come from?

Quick plug: Our friend Andrew owns a company that makes handcrafted wooden sunglasses in Venice Beach, CA. Sounds amazing, right? Well, they are ^^ and I’d love it if you’d check out his website www.MavEyewear.com or Instagram page @MaverickEyewear <3 (totally not paid or sponsored, just wanting to give a shout out to a friend!)

    2012 Oscars: Best Dressed

Has it really been a month since I last posted?? Wow, I had no idea it’d been so long! February was a crazy month with me starting my new job at BCBG, promoting 3 VSPink events, taking exams, transferring everything to a new computer and having to do it all while dealing with an annoying sore throat/cough that won’t go away. Thankfully, Spring Break has arrived, which means I’ll have some time to rest up and get better as well as catch up on my blogging. There are SO many things I’ve been wanting to write about so expects lots of posts during the next week and hopefully I can get back to regularly blogging this month.

About a week and a half ago was the biggest fashion event of the awards season – the Academy Awards! So it only made sense that my first post after a month-long hiatus be its Best Dressed list. I wasn’t overwhelmed or underwhelmed, but one thing I really liked was the variety of looks we saw on the red carpet although white was definitely the trend of the night.

     #1 – Jessica Chastain – Alexander McQueen

    #2 – Gwyneth Paltrow – Tom Ford

#3 – Maria Menounos – Maria Lucia Hohan

     #4 – Leslie Mann – Roberto Cavalli

     #5 – Angelina Jolie – Atelier Versace

    #6 – Ellie Kemper – Armani Prive

    #7 – Stacy Keibler – Marchesa

     #8 – Milla Jovovich – Elie Saab

     #9 – Octavia Spencer – Tadashi Shoji

    2011 Oscars: Best Dressed

So with a hectic week of exams and a busy Spring Break schedule (Miami and Orlando!), I fell a little behind with my blogging. This post is over a week late, but I still wanted to share my thoughts on the fashion at the Academy Awards since it is THE red carpet event of the season.
    #1 – Natalie Portman – Rodarte
The soon-to-be mother and well-deserved Best Actress winner looked radiant in this gorgeous, deep purple gown which perfectly complimented her skin tone.
    #2 – Anne Hathaway – Atelier Versace
This gown with its fitted and embroidered bodice was my favorite of Anne’s many wardrobe changes. I also loved the red strapless Valentino gown she wore on the red carpet. Kudos to her stylist Rachel Zoe.
#3 – Mila Kunis – Elie Saab Haute Couture
Some critics thought the color washed her out, but I disagree. I think the color and gown look lovely on her.
    #4 – Mandy Moore – Monique Lhuiller
Mandy was the epitome of elegance and sophistication in this sparkling nude gown.
    #5 – Gwyneth Paltrow – Calvin Klein
Gwyneth looked stunning in this chic metallic gown, complete with effortlessly slick-straight hair.
    #5 – Hilary Swank – Gucci Premiere
The two-time Oscar winner exuded glamour in this silver embellished gown. Usually, I’m not a fan of anything with feathers but here it works.
    #6 – Hailee Steinfeld – Marchesa
I love it when young stars dress their age, and Hailee’s fashion choices have really been a breath of fresh air. She looked incredibly youthful and still ladylike in this custom-made tea-length dress.
    #8 – Helen Mirren – Vivienne Westwood
Speaking of dressing well for their age, nobody does it better than Helen Mirren. She always gets its right. Simply classy.
    #9 – Jennifer Hudson – Versace
Jennifer wowed everyone in this stunning orange halter gown which showed off her new toned figure.
#10 – Reese Witherspoon – Giorgio Armani Prive
Although not the most innovative design, the simple and classic black and white gown nonetheless looked stunning on the former Oscar winner.
