    2017 Oscars Best Dressed

2017 Oscars Best Dressed // The Geeky Fashionista

I think this is the earliest I’ve ever put up a Best Dressed list! Yay – go me!! I really haven’t been feeling very well all week (meaning no annual Oscars viewing party with friends for me) so it’s been a bit difficult doing, well, anything but seeing as how I’m leaving in 2 days to go to AUSTRALIA (!!!), I really wanted to push myself to get this post up ASAP.

Anyway…the Oscars were this past Sunday and despite being majorly sick in bed, I was still able to watch (and tweet) the broadcast in real time! And what an Oscars it was! Of course, there was that infamous Best Picture snafu we’ve all heard about by now… Despite that, overall, I thought it was a really good show and that Jimmy Kimmel did a great job hosting.

La La Land was one of my Top 5 Films of the year but I was glad to see one of my other favorites, Hacksaw Ridge, getting some love and taking home 2 awards. I’m usually pretty spot on with my Oscars predictions each year but this year with 18 out of 24, I was a bit off. Some winners threw me for a loop (i.e. Suicide Squad) and others (Fantastic Beasts, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival) I was genuinely happy to be wrong about.

But this post is about FASHION so let’s talk about that. There were some real stunners on the red carpet. I miss my flowy gowns of awards shows past, but it’s definitely interesting to see how fashion evolves over the years. The biggest color trends I saw were lots of metallics (especially gold), black, white, and red. There were also lots of long sleeves, high slits, high necklines, low plunging necklines, capes, and velvet!

Who worked these trends the best? Keep reading for my Oscars Best Dressed List!

    2017 Golden Globes Best Dressed

Golden Globes Best Dressed // The Geeky Fashionista

Awards season is in full swing and you know what that means! It’s time for my annual red carpet Best Dressed lists! We’re starting things off with last Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony where La La Land received a totally deserved record-breaking 7 wins! Seriously, if you haven’t seen this movie yet…Go. See. It. As for the fashion (because that’s what this post is about), I was really feeling a lot of the looks this year! There were more plunging necklines than I’ve ever seen at one show, but they were done very tastefully and different so it never seemed like we were seeing the same thing over and over again. Other trends we saw were lots of sparkle, metallics, and the color yellow.

Keep reading to see my top 10 Best Dressed Golden Globes picks!

    2015 Golden Globes Best Dressed

The Golden Globes happened this past week and with that we are officially in awards season! As usual, I did not catch the live broadcast, but instead stayed up to date on all the red carpet goodness and winners through Twitter.  Highlights for me included: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting because they are flawless and should host everything and, yes, women can be funny; Gina Rodriguez‘s win for Jane the Virgin because she’s a wonderfully charming actress in a wonderfully charming and underrated show and the win was totally deserved (and historical! as it was the CW’s first ever Globe win); How To Train Your Dragon 2‘s win for Best Animated Feature because while I do LOVE me some The Lego Movie, this movie was just magical and gave me all the feels; and Matt Bomer‘s win because it gave me the opportunity to see more of Matt Bomer. Anyway, this is a fashion post, so let’s talk fashion. Here are my totally random top picks for Best Dressed at the Golden Globes.

    Emma Stone – Lanvin
Not sure how I feel about that giant bow/cape thing, but it does add something and leave it to Emma to always try something different and look fashion forward and fresh. I wouldn’t love this nearly as much if it were dress.

    Jenna Dewan-Tatum – Carolina Herrera
I’m surprised how much I loved the color yellow at the Globes. Also surprised at how much I love this dress as the shape is a little odd especially around the middle. I think Jenna’s just really working it, the contrast with her dark hair is fantastic.

     Reese Witherspoon – Calvin Klein
Simple, classic, elegant – very Reese.

     Naomi Watts – Gucci
New trend alert! Snake necklaces are in (Kate Beckinsale also rocked one at the AMAs) as is the aforementioned color yellow.

     Lupita Nyong’o – Giambattista Valli
I love how much fun Lupita has with her red carpet fashion choices, especially when it comes to color! You know she’s always going to pop and look lovely in whatever she wears and this was no exception. Such a show stopper. Also her, makeup is divine.

    Leslie Mann – KAUFMANFRANCO
More yellow! Love the surprise pop of green in the earrings and clutch!

    Kate Beckinsale – Elie Saab
Kate looks gorgeous as usual. I love the sparkly top, the flawy bottom, and the accessories (big earrings are a guilty pleasure of mine even if not always flattering). My favorite little detail are the black nails – something so small yet I feel like it just elevates the look to another level.

    Amy Adams – Atelier Versace
Super safe – I feel like she’s worn something like this many times before, but the color is just oh so perfect on her.

2012 Kids’ Choice Awards: Best Dressed

I am so pleased with the fashion choices at this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards! It can be a tricky event to dress for because you don’t want to look too formal or too casual and if you’re young you don’t want to dress too old and if you’re old you don’t want to dress too young. Really, the key to this event is looking age-appropriate and fun – you want to appear effortlessly stylish and not like you’re trying too hard. I’m happy to say that most stars pulled this off and looked great. Here were my top 5 favorite looks:

    #1 – Selena Gomez – Dolce & Gabbana
On anyone else, this look probably would not have worked and instead have looked trashy. Selena, however, has always managed to find the perfect balance and combination of cute and sexy and, once again, looks amazing as usual in this D&G two-piece which consists of a floral bustier top and a gorgeous crystal-embellished skirt. She completed the look with a pair of drool-worthy two-tone pink and orange Cesare Paciotti studded heels.

#2 – Taylor Swift – Maria Lucia Hohan
Taylor was honored with the “Big Help” award by Michelle Obama for her ongoing charity work. She accepted her award in a very sweet and girly ballerina-inspired gown and accessorized with gold Nicholas Kirkwood sandals and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Love her blue nails and braided up-do.

    #3 – Emma Stone – Antonio Berardi
Emma is back to her natural blonde and looking super chic in this feminine nude/blush dress (which I adored on the runway for its simple but unique construction). She paired the dress with great nude Alejandro Ingelmo ‘Gilda’ wedges and Irene Neuwirth jewels, but we all know her best accessory was her adorable boyfriend and future Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield.

    #4 – Sarah Hyland – Myne
Sarah stood out in this great red wraparound maxi dress which featured a thigh high split which she paired with a Kotur gold clutch and strappy Cesare Paciotti sandals. I think she looks great – my only complaint is that her center-parted straight hair is a bit boring.

    #5 – Ashley Tisdale – Kymerah
I might be in the minority here, but I do like this dress even if I’m not the biggest fan of it on Ashely (I think a dark-haired celeb like Selena or Sarah could’ve really rocked this). I’m a sucker for high-low dresses and I like the sheer coral over the black and white pattern, but I’m not feeling the black Brian Atwood fringed heels or the random red stripe in her hair.

    2012 SAG Awards: Best Dressed

The Screen Actors Guild Awards aren’t quite as glamorous as the Golden Globes, but a little more laid back and fun – allowing some fashion risks. Although I’m more a fan of classic looks, I can appreciate risk takers such as Rose Byrne’s Elie Saab jumpsuit even if they aren’t my favorites. The SAGs brought some pleasant surprises (Naya Rivera actually makes my Best Dressed list! Lea Michele actually tops my Best Dressed list!) and disappointments (Shailene Woodley, you were on such a roll), and while I wasn’t terribly won over by the fashion, I did love seeing all the vibrant hues mixed in with the usual blacks and neutrals that popped up on the red carpet. Here are my top 10 best dressed picks.
    #1 – Lea Michele – Atelier Versace
I still feel she tries too hard, but there’s denying this gown is absolutely gorgeous.
    #2 – Stacy Keibler – Marchesa
I thought only Kate Middleton could make black lace look this classy and sophisticated.
    #3 – Viola Davis – Marchesa
The Outstanding Leading Actress winner looked like a greek goddess in this ethereal gown.
#4 – Emily Blunt – Oscar de la Renta
Hands down, best color of the night – and the dress is simple but stunning.
    #5 – Naya Rivera – Naeem Khan
Usually a miss on the red carpet, she has never looked better in this embellished gown.
    #6 – Angelina Jolie – Jenny Packham
I love how the gown looks like liquid metal.
    #7 – Natalie Portman – Giambattista Valli
Such an elegant and simple look – and I love the burgundy color!
    #8 – Dianna Agron – Carolina Herrara
She looks so fresh and pretty in this lovely fuchsia (another gorgeous color) gown.
    #9 – Jessica Chastain – Calvin Klein
The electric blue gown looks amazing against her fair skin and red hair.
    #10 – Emma Stone – Alexander McQueen
I usually don’t like this kind of silhouette, but if anyone can rock it, it’s Emma Stone in head to toe Alexander McQueen.

    2012 Golden Globes: Best Dressed

I know this post is about a week overdue, but refer to my Laptop Situation post to understand the delay. As stated in my Critics’ Choice Awards: Best Dressed post, I loved the fashion at the Golden Globes, and I’m eagerly awaiting the Oscars to see what these lovely ladies will do next. The gowns were gorgeous and varied (although nude was definitely the trend of the night); the hair and makeup flawless; and the accessories perfectly complimentary. Like the CCAs, I had a hard time putting the looks in order (it was difficult enough narrowing down the list to just 12 to begin with). What I basically ended up doing was sitting back and asking myself, “Who would I want to look like and which gown would I want to wear if I was on the red carpet?” and here’s the resulting list.
    #1 – Kate Beckinsale – Roberto Cavalli
Simply flawless in every way. In my opinion, Kate is one of, if not THE most beautiful women on the planet (AND she’s hilarious) which might give her an unfair advantage since she would probably look good in a trash bag, but she has fantastic style to boot. Some may complain that this look is boring or nothing special, but I love it. The gown’s silhouette is very flattering, and the beading detail is incredible. I LOVE that she left her neck bare but accessorized with huge, eye-catching earrings and bracelets. Her hair is pulled back in an updo, showing off her criminally gorgeous face.
    #2 – Shailene Woodley – Marchesa
The more I looked at this gown, the more I fell in love with it. The detail of the bodice is simply amazing, and the color works so well with her skin tone. She made the right choice in letting this ultra-feminine gown be the center of attention by wearing light, fresh makeup and no jewelry but for some small earrings. She may be young, but Shailene has demonstrated great red carpet style this awards season so far, managing to look both classy and age appropriate – props!
    #3 – Charlize Theron – Dior Couture
This look seemed to be the favorite of the night and for good reason! People were eagerly anticipating Charlize’s red carpet comeback, and she did not disappoint. With her light pink Dior gown, she looked like an ethereal princess among the sea of attendees. On anyone else, someone might say there is too much going on in this outfit with the plunging neckline, high slit, big side bow, headband…but Charlize wears everything with such elegance and confidence, and she makes it look effortless. Just gorgeous.
    #4 – Felicity Huffman – Romona Keveza
Why, oh why weren’t there any red carpet pictures of this GORGEOUS gown?? The moment Felicity stepped on stage to present, I thought to myself, “Wow, she has never looked better!” She looked downright stunning with her soft, wavy updo and natural makeup in this beautiful gold Romona Keveza gown. And how cute was her little ditty with her husband and fellow presenter William H. Macy?
    #5 – Sarah Hyland – Dolce & Gabbana
I love, love, LOVE all the lace here. It gives the dress such an interesting texture and romantic look. I also love her wavy updo and smokey eye makeup with nude lips. Sarah is another young star who has a knack for choosing sophisticated yet youthful looks for the red carpet.
     #6 – Emma Stone – Lanvin
Speaking of young stars with great red carpet style… it’s always exciting to see what Emma will be wearing because you never know what she’s going to do next. She keeps it young and fresh, fashion-forward and always sophisticated, and the Golden Globes were no different. The two-tone plum and fuschia coloring is just fantastic and oh-so-flattering against her fair skin. The embroidered shoulders are an interesting touch as is the awesome eagle belt. Love the hair and makeup, as well.
    #7 – Sophia Vergara – Vera Wang
This woman has such an amazing body! How can you be that curvy and have such skinny arms? It’s just not fair. But back to the dress…the deep blue mermaid gown definitely showed off her incredible figure, and I love the texture at the bottom. Her sleek straight hair, red lipstick, and big bold earrings were pretty standard Sophia, but hey, if it works…
    #8 – Jessica Alba – Gucci
Jessica looks so girly and romantic here. The lavender gown with beading detail is so pretty, and her skin (and smile) is just radiant. It’s not a very daring look, and she’s definitely done this same hair and makeup combo before (it’s fabulous, nonetheless), but l love its softness.
     #9 – Salma Hayek – Gucci Premiere
Now to go from girly and romantic to womanly and fierce. Salma looked stunning in her beaded Gucci gown. I especially liked the design of the bodice. The only negative is her hair. While I liked her long wavy hair, and I’m usually a fan of ombre, the color change here is a little too abrupt for my taste.
     #10 – Nicole Kidman – Versace
Nicole looked positively glowing in this grey column gown with intricate gold stud detailing. She’s had some questionable choices in the past, but totally redeems herself here. I could just stare at this gown with all its details for hours – it’s amazing. The hair, makeup, and accessories – all quite simple – come together to compliment the stunning look.
    #11 – Reese Witherspoon – Zac Posen
Reese looked red hot in this Jessica Rabbit-esque, figure-hugging bustier gown. You can’t go wrong with a sweetheart necklines, in my opinion, and I’m really loving her beachy, tousled waves and natural makeup.
    #12 – Evan Rachel Wood – Gucci
Such an interesting, modern take on an Old Hollywood-style gown! I love the emerald ombre-like coloring and the different textures of the sequins and peacock feathers. Don’t know how many people could pull such an exquisite gown off, but Evan looks sophisticated and confident as ever (check out that posture!).

    Trendspotting: Headbands & Chignons

In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with glamorous loose waves, sleek long hair, or a sassy high ponytail on the red carpet, and while there were plenty of these looks at the awards event, two other hair trends were quite prominent and the talk of the town at the Golden Globes.

First, were the headbands worn by not one, not two, but three attendees…and three’s a trend, right? Especially when the wearees include Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams. These controversial hair pieces sparked debate across the Internet. Most people either loved them or hate them. I, myself,  am a fan, although I believe they work better for some outfits than others. Charlize and Busy Phillips’ headbands were nice additions to their outfits, but I think Michelle could have done without it.

Want to jump on the trend? Here are some Etsy stores that sell super cute headbands: Vivienne Paris, Ruffles and Fringe, and My Lavaliere.

Second, which really aren’t all that uncommon on the red carpet, were the multitude of romantic, messy chignons. Charlize, always a fashion-forward trendsetter, actually wore both a chignon and a headband – and pulled it off effortlessly! Stars also on the chignon train were Claire Danes, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Kate Winslet, and Jessica Alba.

2012 Critics’ Choice Awards: Best Dressed

Thanks to my apartment’s horrible Internet connection (I finally had to relocate to my boyfriend’s), I am just now posting this as I watch the Golden Globes. I’ll post my thoughts about the Globes fashion in the near future, but I’ll just say that I am IMPRESSED! I think I’ve got my work cut out for me compiling a Best Dressed list. The Critics’ Choice Awards showed that the stars were already stepping up their game from their initial showing at the People’s Choice Awards in preparation for tonight’s big show. Overall, the looks were much more fashion-forward than the PCAs, but nothing particularly took my breath away. If anything, this is a very loosely numbered list since I kept changing the order. Three trends of the night that I liked were the bursts of colors, sleek silhouettes, and casual hair.
     #1 – Diane Kruger – Prada
    #2 – Stacy Keibler – Giorgio Armani
    #3 – Wendi McLendon-Covey
     #4 – Evan Rachel Wood – Valentino
     #5 – Shailene Woodley – Calvin Klein
     #6 – Elisabeth Olsen – Emilio Pucci
    #7 – Emma Stone – Jason Wu
     #8 – Michelle Williams – Chanel
    #9 – Anna O’Reilly – Honor
    #10 – Viola Davis – Raoul

2012 People’s Choice Awards: Best Dressed

Can you believe it’s already awards season? The People’s Choice Awards kicked things off Wednesday, followed by Thursday’s Critic’s Choice Awards, culminating in tomorrow’s Golden Globes ceremony– phew! The celebrity stylists must be going crazy this week! I wasn’t incredibly wowed at the People’s Choice Awards, but I do feel like the stars stepped up this year compared to last so I’m optimistic. What I really loved at the People’s Choice Awards were the variety of looks. We saw long gowns and knee-length cocktail dresses, long sleeves and strapless, sparkles and lace, sleek hair and waves, up-dos and down, natural and intense makeup, even a tuxedo was thrown in. Let’s hope the stars only continue to top themselves this season. Here are my top 5 favorite looks of the night.

    #1 – Jennifer Lawrence – Viktor & Rolf
Jennifer, or as a friend of mine likes to call her, J.Law, looked absolutely stunning in her structured, cobalt Viktor and Rolf dress. When she walked onto the stage with co-star Liam Hemsworth, I literally cheered and was taken aback by just how incredibly gorgeous she really is. I do find it slightly humorous that “the girl on fire” was wearing what appears to be a water-inspired dress – perhaps this is how Cinna would have dressed Katniss while she and Peeta were visiting Distict 4 (speaking of which, were there seriously no pictures of her and Josh Hutcherson together??)? Okay, sorry, enough Hunger Games talk. Back to the dress – she paired it with black Sergio Rossi shoes and Jack Vartanian jewelry. Topping off her striking look, was a simple but sleek ponytail, intense smokey eyes and light peachy lips.

    #2 – Nina Dobrev – Elie Saab
As usual, the red carpet star and People’s Choice award winner looked effortlessly flawless in her emerald Elie Saab cocktail dress and shoes. Nina was one of several celebs who were rocking the ulta-flattering color of the night, green, as well as the recently Trendspotted lace long sleeves. She accessorized her look with a Lauren Merkin clutch and J. Mademe jewelry, and kept her hair and makeup simple with sleek, straight hair and natural makeup.

    #3 – Miley Cyrus – David Koma
I will admit, I’m not a big fan of Miley or the majority of her style choices, but she really killed it that night. With her simple and chic ivory David Koma dress, she looked like a classy young lady instead of a rebellious teen trying too hard. Even with it’s sheer paneling and plunging V-neckline, the dress exuded sophistication, especially when paired with minimumal accessories (Jimmy Choo shoes, Neil Lane jewels and a Marchesa clutch), sideswept waves, and fresh makeup. Love the pleated detailing on the dress too. Keep this up, Miley!

    #4 – Emma Stone – Gucci
Always a fashion frontrunner, Emma paired a stylish kelly green, black lapel Gucci tuxedo jacket with a white blouse and perfectly tailored black trousers. I don’t know how many people could’ve pulled it off, but she totally owned it, never looking more confident. I love how she kept it casual but classy and that color is simply amazing on her against her red hair. Thanks, Emma, for mixing things up a bit and your win, as well.

    #5 – Demi Lovato – Marchesa
Demi looked very grown up (maybe a little too much) in this gorgeous peach strapless Marchesa gown.  It certainly showed off all her curves, and I love the embellished bodice that brings attentions to her slim waist. She paired the gown with Christian Louboutin heels, a Marchesa clutch, and Roseark jewels. I especially adore her hair and makeup – her hair is pulled back into an exquisite bun and her makeup is simply flawless. Despite all these good things, I do think her and the dress, while both lovely, are a little miss-matched for each other, and I would have preferred her in another gown and the dress on someone else.

    Trendspotting: Green With Envy

No need to wait till St. Patrick’s Day! The People’s Choice Awards introduced a hot new color for the Spring – GREEN! Award winners Emma Stone, Nina Dobrev, and Chloe Moretz all wore the color of the night in a range of universally flattering shades from emerald to jade. As demonstrated by these lovely ladies, it’s popularity can probably be attributed to the fact that it works for every hair color and really complements whatever your makeup, whether it be natural or bold.

Are you GREEN with envy? Who wore the shade best?

What I Loved This Month: AUGUST

Oh, wow, what a month! I can’t believe classes started this week! They seemed so far away at the beginning of the month. I’m having a few troubles with my schedule, but hopefully they’ll be figured out before the end of Drop/Add. *crosses fingers* But without further adieu, here’s what I loved this August:

    TV SHOW: Project Runway
PR has been the one show I’ve looked forward to each week this month. And I’m really digging this season even if so far it is a little weaker than some in the past (what was up with the stilts challenge??) Anthony Ryan is definitely my favorite and pick to win (his birdseed dress was stunning), with Anya and Olivier (who needs to step up his game a bit though) also joining him in Bryant Park.

MOVIE: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Not going to lie, despite awesome reviews, I was not expecting much walking into this film. I love sci-fi but the premise didn’t seem all that appealing to me, and the fact there’s already 6 films in the franchise (including an epic fail remake) made me wonder why they would bother making another one. Well, luckily, nothing else seemed all that interesting to me one particular weekend, and I saw it with my dad. We both were blown away just halfway into the movie. It also inspired us to go back and watch the original films. Save your time though and just watch the first one, the others are pretty lackluster.

BOOK: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
I could not put this book down. I saw the Swedish film a semester or two ago at the SLC, but, even so, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the book. I was totally engrossed by the book’s incredible characterizations and mystery. Reading it actually helped me understand the film much better and now I seriously can’t wait to see what David Finch does in the American remake.

    STYLE: Audrey Hepburn
This might seem a bit of a cop-out but it’s true. Audrey is definitely a huge fashion and overall inspiration to me all year-round. I recently read Sam Wasson’s Fifth Avenue, 5AM – great read, by the way – and it described what a style icon she was and how her “little black dress” from Breakfast at Tiffany‘s redefined fashion for women everywhere. I can’t wait to incorporate some of her looks into my wardrobe.

    ACTOR: Emma Stone
I want to be this girl. So. Bad. She’s able to pull off that tricky combination – effortlessly too – of being gorgeous, smart, funny, likable, and cool. I thought she was absolute genius in Easy A and again in Crazy Stupid Love. With the popularity of The Help and landing the role of Gwen Stacy in next year’s The Amazing Spider-man – and dating adorably handsome co-star Andrew Garfield – there is really no stopping this girl.

    MUSICIAN: Adele
She was supposed to be included on the June list but going back it looks like she was left out somehow =/ Regardless, I’m still loving Adele as much now as I did back in June. I’ve probably listened to 21 too many times to count. Her voice is so unique and powerful and she conveys emotion and heartbreak better than anyone else out there right now. I’m incredibly thrilled for all her success, and I bet the guy who inspired her album is kicking himself right now for breaking up with her (but aren’t we glad he did).

    FOOD: Pies
I have said you’re either a pie person or a cake person…and my dad reminded me why I am definitely a pie person (cupcakes are a different story) this month by treating me to both a delicious cherry and apple pie. Nom Nom Nom.

    TRAVEL: Orlando, Florida
Okay, now this really is a cop out because I really haven’t done any traveling this month since I’ve been home. I have made a few trips to Orlando to go shopping and visit friends, but that’s it. This picture from Harry Potter World was taken during my last Spring Break. I WILL go back someday soon. I crave butterbeer almost daily.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH… Reconnecting with all my friends (and hopefully making new ones), CMA, APhiO, and Fall TV!!

What are you guys looking forward to in September?
